The First Stretch Limousine (Bus) Ever Built

PreviousNext

When we think of limousines, stretch limos are probably the first thing that pops into our heads. But until 1928 limousines really weren’t any bigger than an “ordinary” car.

The first stretch limo was specially constructed to carry around hot musical numbers. “Big Bands” were taking the country by storm with their complex brassy sounds and acts like Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman needed a way to get all of their members to the show on time. Enter the Armbruster Company in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

They pieced together the first stretch limo (or fancy “bus”—because that’s what it was) and musicians used it to take the act—equipment and all—on the road.
